“OMG! OMG! What a great book! Buy it now!!”

How many times have you seen a book review like this? You get that familiar warm and
fuzzy feeling, fork over hard-earned $50 only to find out the book is too technical,
outdated, too verbose, impractical or simply does not address what you're after.
Bummer. What happened?
You fell for happy talk and a seemingly high rating.
Rating books from 1 to 5 doesn't work. It simply doesn't capture the book's depth and breadth. Too much work goes into
each book to describe it with a single rating.
Is it too technical? It is proofread well? Are samples useful? Is it still up to date?
A single-score rating doesn't tell you any of it. This is why at Positive Lookahead books
are rated on multiple criteria, and there is no "average rating."

Comment anonymously, if you wish. Link to a review on your blog, if you've already reviewed
a book. Does writing reviews fry your brain? Simply answer a handful of canned questions.
Help others, help yourself!
Those ready to empty their wallet on a new book will appreciate your insight and opinion.
And remember: one day you will be hunting for a book, too, and will rely on other people's recommendations.
What's with shameless plugs?
Writing a book is a huge commitment. It's a considerable effort that takes a lot of time. Yet
many authors feel guilty about promoting their books.
Why?
The last thing you want is for your book to collect dust and pass unnoticed. Is this what you slaved for?
Michael Jensen of the National Academies Press says,
“The biggest thing we have to fear is invisibility in publishing. […] If you’re
not out there in the search engines, on blogs and on the [Wikipedia’s], and being part of the
new information environment, you are disappearing. And that’s the worst thing.”
Get noisy. Announce your books. Connect with readers. Let them know how to reach you.
At Positive Lookahead there are no "shameless plugs" – it's all good!
